Photographer Research Joachim Schmidt

Schmidt is an interesting artist; I believe artist is the correct title, rather than photographer, or maybe even curator. His work is creative and brilliant.

He collects vernacular images from flea markets, old books and the internet. Then he groups them in the same way a curator or "secretary" may file work documents. Work taken by the every day amateur, under normal circumstances, instantly forgettable work when viewed individually or by the named photographer. However Joachim learned that as a society, non professional photographers choice of subjects is generally the same all over the planet. Our families, wildlife in parks, local tourist attractions etc. This resulted in the understanding that if Joachim looks hard enough, he can discover the same object or situation taken by multiple photographers from differing angles; resulting in a more complete image. Presenting them not as a single image or a multiple images overlays such as Corinne Vionnet or Idris Khan, but as a set of images. Allowing the viewer to create a better overall view of any event, location or situation in a unique and unfamiliar style.

Joachim also created collage art works (as above) by linking parts of similar but different people to create a new image. His technique is simple but the results are very effective.
